Hyperplasia

Enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia surrounding urethra.

A.D.A.M.
Definition: Hyperplasia is excessive growth of normal cells in tissue, resulting in enlarged tissue. It can be benign or cancerous. In urology, an "enlarged prostate" is the same as "benign prostatic hyperplasia."
Pronunciation: HY per PLAY sha
Also Known As: hypertrophy, excessive tissue growth
Examples:
My dad was suffering from stop-and-go urinary flow and difficulty urinating. When the doctor examined him, he told him that he had an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The hyperplasia or excessive tissue growth put pressure on his urethra, where urine travels when it leaves the body.
